Eco Friendly Bed and Breakfast
Here at Cambridge House, we pride ourselves on being one of the most environmentally conscious bed and breakfasts in Swaledale, and indeed the whole of the Yorkshire Dales. As devoted nature and wildlife enthusiasts ourselves, we appreciate the strong impact, positive or negative, a hospitality business can have on the environment, and as such take all measures possible to reduce our carbon footprint.
As you will see from our dedicated ‘Food’ page, the majority of the produce that goes into our breakfasts and packed lunches is all sourced from local farms and vendors. One of the main advantages of running a guest house in Swaledale is that we are privy to a comprehensive network of local producers, which enables us to heavily limit the ‘food miles’ of every meal we serve.
Our tap water is safe to drink, though we understand that some guests prefer filtered water, so we provide that ourselves in order to reduce unnecessary packaging waste.
The majority of our linen is washed on site at our guest house using environmentally friendly products, and air dried to limit energy consumption. In high season, some of our laundry is serviced by a small company in Reeth which not only supports a local business but reduces our carbon foot print by minimising the distance the laundry travels. We also operate a three day towel replacement policy, meaning that we don’t automatically replenish towels until the third day of your stay. We are happy to refresh towels on your request, however.
We support British pottery manufacturers by providing Emma Bridgewater mugs in your rooms and Dudson crockery in the dining room; both are manufactured in Stoke-on-Trent in the heart of the 'Potteries' (We lived in North Staffordshire for over 30 years)!
We are totally committed to providing you not only with the most luxurious toiletries but also the most environmentally friendly toiletries and so we have selected Noble Isle, 'The New Tradition'. Noble Isle are made in Chester using the finest fragrances and natural extracts to produce a range of toiletries which are cruelty free and free from parabens.
Small individual bottles of toiletries are wasteful of resources, not only in wasted content but also in plastic waste, so we supply as much as you will ever need of shower gel, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner in large bottles in order to reduce the amount of waste generated.
We use environmentally friendly cleaning products, detergents and cloths wherever possible, but in the kitchen we take care to use products that are compliant with the hygiene standards BS EN 1276:2009/ BS EN 13697:2002 and hand wash EN 1499.
Our water is heated by solar panels, supplemented by our heating system; our living areas feature authentic wood burning fires; every individual bulb on our premises is low energy-consumption, making ours one of the most ecologically friendly guest houses in Reeth, and indeed the wider Swaledale region. We have also taken extra measures to reduce our energy consumption by including installing double glazing and above-requirement insulation.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Cambridge House is a strong advocate of the slogan: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We avoid plastic and metal packaging wherever possible and so reduce our non-biodegradable waste. Most of our paper from toilet paper to stationery is made from recycled material. All our rooms feature stunning examples of antique furniture bought from local auction houses. Wherever possible we recycle all of our waste, from glass bottles and plastic packaging to cardboard and paper. Our green waste is either added to our wormery or if garden waste is collected and recycled by Richmondshire District Council.
If you’re looking for an environmentally conscious bed and breakfast in Reeth, Cambridge House is ideally suited to your requirements.
