Walk from Cambridge House

  • 20 February 2017
  • Cambridge House

A walk around Arkengarthdale from Cambridge House. Distance about 81/2 miles; going can be boggy in places; one steep ascent but rewarded with stunning views from Fremington Edge if good visibility.

Turn left out of the gates and follow the road for 200m until you get to the last house on the RHS, Sleights. Take the signed footpath across the fields. You will cross several fields and 8 stiles, care needed with some, until you meet a track. Follow the track down until you see a stile and a signed footpath on LHS to Langthwaite. If you reach Arkle Beck, you've missed the path! Follow the path alongside Arkle Beck until you reach a footbridge leading into Langthwaite and refreshments at The Red Lion pub.

Head up the lane to Booze. At Town Farm, enter the yard and turn immediately right by a barn into a field. Walk down the field to a post pointing the way through a gap in the wall until you meet a track, Turn right along the track until you meet a sign for Fremington. Turn left down a track, cross Slei Gill and pass buildings and Storthwaite Hall. At the end of the cottage, turn left up a bridleway signed to Hurst and take the steep climb up on to Fremington Edge. Continue to follow the path through a tumbled down wall and alongside the wall on top of Fremington Edge. Enjoy the stunning views across Swaledale and beyond. When you get to a gate turn right through it and follow the path down towards High Fremington. Take the the first track off to the right down the hill until you see a stile. Go through the stile and acroos the fields to Reeth Bridge.

Take time to visit one of the local hostelries to refresh and savour the time spent walking in the Yorkshire Dales.
